Video Monitoring

Video monitoring is the systematic recording and observation of behavior over time, providing a detailed record of actions, interactions, and changes that may be missed during direct observation. Cameras capture activity under defined conditions, while researchers review footage or use behavioral coding and automated tracking to quantify event frequency, duration, sequence, and spatial patterns. In behavioral research, this approach supports objective analysis of subjects in naturalistic or controlled settings, including social interactions, learning, locomotion, and responses to environmental changes. Video monitoring also improves reproducibility by preserving a permanent record that can be independently reviewed, recoded, and compared across experiments.

This paper describes a protocol that uses a remote video monitoring surveillance system to continuously monitor breeding colonies of ground-nesting waterbirds. The system includes five cameras monitoring individual nests and one camera monitoring the colony as a whole, and is powered by car batteries that are recharged via solar panels.

Video-oculography is a very quantitative method to investigate ocular motor performance as well as motor learning. Here, we describe how to measure video-oculography in mice. Applying this technique on normal, pharmacologically-treated or genetically modified mice is a powerful research tool to explore the underlying physiology of motor behaviors.

Simultaneous Video-EEG-ECG Monitoring to Identify Neurocardiac Dysfunction in Mouse Models of Epilepsy

Here, we present a protocol to record brain and heart bio signals in mice using simultaneous video, electroencephalography (EEG), and electrocardiography (ECG). We also describe methods to analyze the resulting EEG-ECG recordings for seizures, EEG spectral power, cardiac function, and heart rate variability.

Multisystem Monitoring of Epileptic Abnormalities in Rabbit: A Method for Simultaneous Video EEG, ECG, Capnography, and Oximetry Recording During Induced Seizures

2025

In this video, we demonstrate a multisystem monitoring method to evaluate neurological and cardiorespiratory abnormalities during intravenous injection of a seizure-inducing drug. The simultaneous monitoring of video EEG, ECG, oximetry, and capnography parameters helps to understand the real-time physiological changes associated with epileptic seizures.

Here we present a protocol to induce severe TBI with the lateral fluid percussion injury (FPI) model in adult, male Wistar rats. We also demonstrate the use of a wireless telemetry system to collect continuous video-EEG recordings and monitor for epileptiform discharges consistent with post-traumatic...
