Electrical Sensing Zone

Electrical sensing zone is an analytical technique that detects and characterizes suspended particles by measuring changes in electrical impedance as they pass through a small aperture. In the Coulter principle, an electrolyte carries current between electrodes, while each nonconductive cell or particle temporarily displaces conductive fluid, producing a pulse whose amplitude reflects particle volume and whose frequency indicates particle concentration. In biochemistry, electrical sensing zone analysis supports rapid cell counting, size distribution measurements, and characterization of biological suspensions. Its reproducibility and ability to analyze large populations make it useful for quality control, sample comparison, and quantitative studies of cells and particulate biomaterials.

A New Single Chamber Implantable Defibrillator with Atrial Sensing: A Practical Demonstration of Sensing and Ease of Implantation

2012

Dual-chamber implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) may improve detection of atrial fibrillation as well as differentiation of tachycardias. However, this advantage is undermined by complications associated with the second electrode, which is required in conventional dual chamber devices. Therefore, BIOTRONIK has developed a new electrode called the LinoxSMART S DX that, when used in conjunction with the Lumax DX ICD, offers dual-chamber detection without the risks associated with the...

Electric Cell-substrate Impedance Sensing for the Quantification of Endothelial Proliferation, Barrier Function, and Motility

This protocol reviews Electric Cell-substrate Impedance Sensing, a method to record and analyze the impedance spectrum of adherent cells for the quantification of cell attachment, proliferation, motility, and cellular responses to pharmacological and toxic stimuli. Detection of endothelial permeability and assessment of cell-cell and cell-substrate contacts are emphasized.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University A common carnival game is to ask people to guess the number of jellybeans packed into a jar. The chances that anyone will get the exact number right are low. But what about the chances that someone will guess 17 or 147,000? Probably even less than the chances of guessing the correct answer; 17 and 147,000 just seem irrational. Why? After all, if the beans cannot be taken out and counted one-at-a-time, how can someone tell that an...

Measuring SMC Contraction In Vitro: A Non-Invasive Method to Evaluate Smooth Muscle Cells Contraction using Electric Cell-Substrate Impedance Sensing

In scientific terms, these abilities are referred to as theory of mind, and this understanding is necessary for activities like giving compliments,...
