Swimmer Performance Testing

Swimmer performance testing is the systematic measurement of a swimmer’s speed, endurance, technique, and physiological responses to characterize athletic performance. Testing uses standardized distances, workloads, or repeated efforts while recording outcomes such as race time, stroke rate, heart rate, and, when relevant to biochemistry, blood lactate or other metabolic indicators that reflect energy use and recovery. Comparing results across sessions helps identify performance limits, evaluate training adaptations, and distinguish technical from metabolic contributors to fatigue. These measurements support individualized training, research on exercise metabolism, and evidence-based assessment of competitive performance.

Y-shaped cutting measures fracture-relevant length scales and energies in soft materials. Previous apparatuses were designed for benchtop measurements. This protocol describes the fabrication and use of an apparatus that orients the setup horizontally and provides the fine positioning capabilities necessary for in situ viewing, plus failure quantification, via an optical microscope.
