Absorbent Bed

An absorbent bed is a packed layer of porous material that removes, retains, or concentrates substances from a passing liquid or gas, making it useful for controlled fluid processing in bioengineering. As the fluid moves through the bed, target molecules enter or bind within the absorbent matrix through processes such as pore uptake, surface interactions, or partitioning, while flow rate, bed composition, and contact time influence performance. Absorbent beds support sample preparation, purification, and separation by reducing unwanted components or collecting valuable biomolecules. Their design helps researchers improve mass transfer, process efficiency, and the scalability of bioprocessing systems.

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Gas absorbers are used to remove contaminants from gas streams. Multiple designs are used to accomplish this objective1. A packed bed column uses gas and liquid streams running counter to each other in a column packed with loose packing materials, such as ceramics, metals, and plastics, or structured packing1. The packed bed uses surface area created by the packing to...

Single and Two-phase Flow in a Packed Bed Reactor

2023

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA The goal of this experiment is to determine the magnitude of maldistribution in typical packed bed reactors in both single phase and two-phase (gas-liquid) flow and evaluate the effects of this maldistribution on pressure drop. The concepts of residence time distribution and dispersion are introduced through the use of tracers, and these concepts are related to physical...

Capillary Beds

Capillary beds are networks of tiny blood vessels that play a crucial role in the circulatory system. These beds are where the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products occurs between the blood and surrounding tissues. Each capillary bed consists of numerous capillaries, which are the smallest blood vessels in the body, typically only one cell-thick. This thinness allows for the efficient diffusion of substances. Capillaries connect arterioles, small branches of arteries, to venules,...
