Airway Mucosa Imaging

Airway mucosa imaging is the visualization and measurement of the respiratory tract’s epithelial lining, mucus layer, cilia, and underlying tissues, helping researchers assess how this barrier maintains airway health. Imaging methods capture structural and dynamic features by directing light, sound, or other signals into airway tissues and analyzing the returned or emitted information, often in living systems or engineered models. In bioengineering, these approaches support the design and evaluation of airway-on-a-chip platforms, biomaterials, and tissue-engineered constructs. They also reveal changes in mucus transport, epithelial integrity, and inflammation, informing studies of respiratory disease, drug delivery, and regenerative therapies.

The topical anesthetic lidocaine was atomized using a high oxygen flow through the working channel of a flexible intubating endoscope to achieve topical airway anesthesia for awake endotracheal intubation. We prefer this modified spray-as-you-go technique for endoscopic intubation to classical bolus application because of higher patient satisfaction and better compliance.

We introduce a novel method for the maintenance of human intestinal mucosa in culture and monitoring of the response to various types of stimuli over at least 24 hrs. With our method, the polarity of the tissue is maintained, allowing for a physiological stimulation via the apical route.
