Dynamic Conditions

Dynamic conditions are experimental or physiological environments in which physical, chemical, or biological parameters change over time rather than remaining constant. In bioengineering, systems may regulate variables such as fluid flow, mechanical loading, oxygen availability, nutrient levels, or biochemical signals to reproduce changing conditions found in living tissues. These time-dependent inputs influence transport, cell signaling, gene expression, growth, and tissue organization, often through feedback between cells and their surroundings. Applying dynamic conditions in bioreactors, tissue-engineering platforms, organ-on-chip models, and cell cultures can produce more physiologically relevant results and improve the design of engineered tissues, disease models, and therapeutic strategies.

Fear Conditioning

2023

Fear Conditioning is a type of learning in which an association is established between a negative unpleasant event and a harmless stimulus. This leads to a fear of the harmless stimulus. This process is largely mediated by the amygdala, which is a brain region involved in emotions and stress reactions. Fear conditioning can be utilized in several ways to understand different aspects of learning and memory. This video presents an overview of the principles behind fear conditioning, discusses the...

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA It is rare nowadays that a whole year goes by without a major earthquake event wreaking havoc somewhere around the world. In some cases, like the 2005 Banda Ache earthquake in Indonesia, the damage involved large geographic areas and casualties in the six figures. In general, the number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing, however, the vulnerability of the built environment is...
