Electro Rotation

Electro rotation, also called electrorotation, is a dielectric spectroscopy technique that measures how biological cells rotate in a rotating electric field. It matters because rotational behavior reveals electrical properties of the cell without requiring destructive labeling. In practice, electrodes generate a controlled rotating field that induces a dipole in the cell; a phase difference between the induced dipole and field creates torque, while angular velocity varies with frequency and membrane, cytoplasmic, and surface properties. Bioengineering researchers use electro rotation to characterize membrane capacitance, cytoplasm conductivity, viability, and cell state, supporting quality control, disease studies, and the design of cell-based technologies.
