Lung Dissection

Lung dissection is the systematic separation and examination of lung tissues, airways, blood vessels, and supporting structures to reveal their anatomy and organization. During the procedure, careful incisions and blunt or sharp separation expose branching bronchi, pulmonary vessels, pleural surfaces, and distinct tissue layers while preserving key relationships. In bioengineering, this anatomical information guides the design of lung-on-a-chip systems, 3D-printed models, biomaterials, and engineered respiratory tissues. Dissection also supports comparative anatomy, disease investigation, imaging validation, and the development of strategies for lung repair and transplantation by linking native structure with mechanical and functional requirements.

This paper describes a striaghforward and efficient method of intubating mice for pulmonary function measurements or pulmonary instillation, that allows the mice to recover and be studied at later times. The procedure involves an inexpensive fiberoptic light source that directly illuminates the trachea.
