File Naming

File naming is the systematic practice of assigning clear, consistent names to digital files so they can be identified, organized, retrieved, and shared efficiently. In bioengineering, a naming convention can encode details such as the project, sample or specimen, experiment, date, data type, and version, while standardized separators and terminology reduce ambiguity and support automated sorting. Consistent file naming improves collaboration, data integrity, and reproducibility across laboratory workflows, including imaging, biomaterials testing, computational modeling, and biological assays. When combined with structured folders and metadata, it also facilitates quality control, long-term data management, and reliable transfer of research records.

Naming Enantiomers

2023

The naming of enantiomers employs the Cahn–Ingold–Prelog rules that involve assigning priorities to different substituent groups at a chiral center. Each enantiomer, being a distinct molecule, is assigned a unique name by the Cahn–Ingold–Prelog (CIP) rules, also called the R–S system. The prefix R- or S- attached to the chiral centers in an enantiomer is dependent on the spatial arrangement of the four substituents on the chiral center. The R–S system essentially comprises three steps:...

Naming Skeletal Muscles

The naming of the approximately 700 muscles in the human body is based on a set of criteria designed to provide descriptive information about each muscle, making it easier to identify and remember them. The key factors used in naming muscles include: Region of the Body: Certain muscles in the body are classified based on their location or association with a specific area. For example, the temporalis muscle is in the head region, whereas the brachialis is in the arm. Position and Depth:...

Researchers adopt both the lexical decision task and the naming task to investigate some important topics such as character/word recognition by comparing the frequency effect between these two tasks. This article introduces this approach through two exemplar experiments and elaborates on the underlying logic.

Common Names of Aldehydes and Ketones

Some common aldehydes and ketones are popularly known by their common names used historically and predate the IUPAC nomenclature. Common names of aldehydes are derived from the names of their corresponding acid. For instance, the two-carbon aldehyde–acetaldehyde derives its name from the corresponding acid–acetic acid. Similarly, formaldehyde derives its name from formic acid and benzaldehyde from benzoic acid. Aliphatic ketones are named by suffixing the word “ketone” to the alphabetically...
