Fused Deposition Modeling

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is an additive manufacturing technique that builds three-dimensional objects layer by layer from a digital design, making it important for rapid, customized fabrication. During printing, thermoplastic filament is heated until it softens, extruded through a nozzle, and deposited along programmed paths; the material cools and solidifies to form successive layers. In bioengineering, FDM supports the production of anatomical models, laboratory devices, and customized components, while selected biocompatible or biodegradable polymers can support tissue-engineering research. Control of temperature, layer thickness, infill, and print speed influences structural accuracy, mechanical behavior, and suitability for biological applications.

Reclosers and Fuses

2024

Automatic circuit reclosers enhance the protection of distribution circuits by interrupting and auto-reclosing an AC circuit according to a preset sequence. They effectively manage temporary faults on overhead distribution lines, often caused by tree limbs or wildlife, by briefly disrupting service to improve overall reliability. However, contact with reclosers or energized broken conductors on the ground can pose serious hazards. A comprehensive protection scheme for radial distribution...

Circuit Breaker and Fuse Selection

2024

A circuit breaker is a device engineered to interrupt fault currents and sometimes reclose automatically. When a fault current is detected, the breaker separates the electrical contacts, which generates an arc. This arc is extinguished by methods such as elongation, cooling, or splitting, depending on the breaker's design. Breakers are categorized based on the voltage they operate at and the medium used for arc extinction, such as air, oil, SF6 gas, or vacuum. In high-voltage systems, circuit...

This report describes the use of a custom-built system to perform aerosol deposition of thick films of yttrium iron garnet onto sapphire substrates at RT. The deposited films are characterized using scanning electron microscopy, profilometry, and ferromagnetic resonance to give a representative overview of the capabilities of the technique.

Phase Transitions: Sublimation and Deposition

2020

Some solids can transition directly into the gaseous state, bypassing the liquid state, via a process known as sublimation. At room temperature and standard pressure, a piece of dry ice (solid CO2) sublimes, appearing to gradually disappear without ever forming any liquid. Snow and ice sublimate at temperatures below the melting point of water, a slow process that may be accelerated by winds and the reduced atmospheric pressures at high altitudes. When solid iodine is warmed, the solid sublimes...
