Particle Characterization

Particle characterization is the measurement of a particle population’s physical, chemical, and interfacial properties, including size, size distribution, shape, composition, and surface charge. Techniques such as dynamic light scattering, microscopy, and electrophoretic mobility analysis generate these measurements by tracking light scattering, visual features, or particle movement in an applied electric field. In bioengineering, characterization helps assess nanoparticles, drug-delivery systems, biomaterials, and cell-derived vesicles, where particle size and surface properties influence stability, transport, cellular uptake, and biological activity. Reliable measurements support formulation development, quality control, reproducibility, and the design of particles for diagnostic, therapeutic, and tissue-engineering applications.

We demonstrate how to determine the size distribution of semiconductor nanocrystals in a quantitative manner using Raman spectroscopy employing an analytically defined multi-particle phonon confinement model. Results obtained are in excellent agreement with the other size analysis techniques like transmission electron microscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy.

Subatomic Particles

Dalton was only partially correct about the particles that make up matter. All matter is composed of atoms, and atoms are composed of three smaller subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. These three particles account for the mass and the charge of an atom. The Discovery of the Electron The first clue about the subatomic structure came at the end of the 19th century when J.J. Thomson discovered the electron using a cathode ray tube. This apparatus consisted of a sealed glass...

This protocol describes an iSCAT-based image processing and single-particle tracking approach that enables the simultaneous investigation of the molecular mass and the diffusive behavior of macromolecules interacting with lipid membranes. Step-by-step instructions for sample preparation, mass-to-contrast conversion, movie acquisition, and post-processing are provided alongside directions to prevent potential pitfalls.

Synthesis and Characterization of Self-Assembled Metal-Organic Framework Monolayers Using Polymer-Coated Particles

2024

A protocol for the synthesis and characterization of self-assembled metal-organic framework monolayers is provided using polymer-grafted, metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals. The procedure shows that polymer-grafted MOF particles can be self-assembled at an air-water interface resulting in well-formed, free-standing, monolayer structures as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy imaging.
