Stroke Survivors

Stroke survivors are people recovering from or living with the consequences of a stroke, a disruption of brain blood flow that can impair movement, sensation, speech, cognition, or independence. After injury, surviving neural circuits may reorganize, while weakness, altered muscle control, and reduced feedback can limit purposeful movement and everyday function. Bioengineering applies this understanding to develop rehabilitation robots, wearable sensors, neuroprosthetic devices, and brain-computer interfaces that measure performance, deliver targeted assistance, or translate neural signals into control commands. These technologies support personalized therapy, objective progress tracking, and new strategies for restoring function and participation in daily life.

2021

This protocol is intended to investigate the impact of task conditions on movement strategies in chronic stroke survivors. Further, this protocol can be used to examine if a restriction in elbow extension induced by neuromuscular electrical stimulation causes trunk compensation during goal-directed arm reaches in non-disabled adults.

Various murine models of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) are widely used in experimental brain research. Here, we demonstrate the model of transcranial permanent distal MCAO which produces consistent cortical infarction of a size corresponding to damage imposed by the majority of human ischemic strokes.

Soft Pneumatic Robot Modulates Graph Theory Metrics of Brain Network for Hand Rehabilitation After Stroke

The Stroke Preclinical Assessment Network Multi-Laboratory Model of Thromboembolic Stroke with Thrombolysis: TE-MCAo

2025

To simulate thromboembolic stroke, emboli prepared from heterologous rat blood were injected into the middle cerebral artery, followed by administration of systemic thrombolysis for recanalization. This version of the model is optimized for use in a multi-laboratory network and supports testing multiple candidate therapeutics.
