Plant Extract Purification

Plant extract purification is the separation and concentration of selected compounds from complex mixtures obtained from plant tissues, an essential step in biological research and natural-product analysis. It typically combines sample preparation with filtration, solvent partitioning, and chromatographic methods that exploit differences in solubility, polarity, molecular size, or affinity to isolate target constituents from pigments, lipids, sugars, and other interfering materials. Purified extracts support the identification and characterization of bioactive molecules, quality assessment of botanical materials, and reproducible studies of plant-derived compounds. These techniques also aid investigations in pharmacology, biotechnology, food science, and metabolomics.

Purification of a Total Lipid Extract with Column Chromatography

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The product of an organic solvent extraction, a total lipid extract (TLE), is often a complex mixture of hundreds, if not thousands, of different compounds. The researcher is often only interested in a handful of compounds. The compounds of interest may belong to one of several classes of compounds, such as alkanes, ketones, alcohols, or acids (Figure 1), and it may be useful to remove the compound classes to which it does...
