Acclimation Tank

An acclimation tank is a temporary, controlled aquatic environment used to help fish, invertebrates, plants, or other aquatic organisms adjust safely to new surroundings. By matching and gradually changing conditions such as temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and water chemistry, it reduces physiological stress during transfer between systems. Acclimation tanks support quarantine, animal transport, aquarium setup, breeding, and laboratory studies by allowing organisms to stabilize before introduction to a permanent habitat. Careful monitoring of water quality and gradual transitions can improve survival, reduce disease-related risks, and promote reliable outcomes in biological research and aquatic husbandry.

Novel Tank Diving Assay: A Method to Study Innate Stress Responses in Zebrafish

2023

The article describes a behavioral method to assess stress in zebrafish. In response to stress, zebrafish tends to swim at bottom of a tank until stress is removed. The sample protocol describes stepwise method for performing the assay.

Do-It-Yourself Device for Recovery of Cryopreserved Samples Accidentally Dropped into Cryogenic Storage Tanks

Here, we present a comprehensive behavioral test battery, including the novel tank, Shoaling, and social preference tests, to effectively determine the potential neurotoxic effects of chemicals (e.g., methamphetamine and glyphosate) on adult zebrafish using a single tank. This method is relevant to neurotoxicity and environmental research.

2026

Multi-chamber social preference tasks have been adapted from rodents to zebrafish, facilitating the study of social behavior in model organisms. This protocol validates a low-cost 3-chamber open-tank task using webcams and open-source software to measure zebrafish social preference, making it accessible to undergraduate research and teaching.
