Air-free Environment

An air-free environment is a controlled space from which atmospheric gases, especially oxygen, have been removed or excluded to protect oxygen-sensitive biological materials and reactions. It is created by sealing samples or cultures from outside air and replacing the atmosphere with an inert gas, or by using oxygen-removing systems that maintain very low oxygen conditions. These conditions support the cultivation and study of anaerobic microorganisms, oxygen-sensitive enzymes, and cellular processes governed by redox chemistry. Air-free handling also improves experimental reproducibility by limiting unwanted oxidation, helping researchers characterize metabolism, interactions, and biotechnological processes that cannot be examined reliably in ordinary laboratory air.
