Amoeba Membrane Permeability

Amoeba membrane permeability is the ability of an amoeba’s plasma membrane to regulate which substances enter and leave the cell, maintaining internal conditions needed for survival. The membrane’s selectively permeable lipid bilayer allows small molecules such as oxygen and carbon dioxide to cross by diffusion, while water moves by osmosis and larger materials enter or exit through endocytosis and exocytosis; in freshwater species, a contractile vacuole expels excess water. Studying these processes helps explain how single-celled organisms balance solute concentrations, obtain nutrients, remove wastes, and respond to changing environments, making amoebae useful models for fundamental cell transport and homeostasis.
