Anabaena Pcc7120

Anabaena PCC7120 is a filamentous cyanobacterium widely used as a model for studying photosynthesis, cellular differentiation, and biological nitrogen fixation. When combined nitrogen becomes limited, some vegetative cells differentiate into specialized heterocysts that maintain a low-oxygen environment, activate nitrogenase, and convert atmospheric nitrogen into usable ammonia. In return, heterocysts receive carbon compounds from neighboring vegetative cells, creating a functional division of labor along the filament. Research on Anabaena PCC7120 has clarified how cyanobacteria regulate multicellularity, exchange metabolites, and coordinate gene expression, with implications for microbial ecology, crop-associated nitrogen inputs, and sustainable biotechnology.
