Antigen Recognition

Antigen recognition is the process by which immune cells identify molecular features of foreign or altered substances, enabling the body to distinguish potential threats from healthy tissues. B cells use membrane-bound antibodies to bind specific epitopes directly, while T cells recognize peptide fragments displayed by major histocompatibility complex molecules through their T-cell receptors. This selective interaction initiates signaling that can activate lymphocytes, promote antibody production, or recruit cellular defenses. Understanding antigen recognition supports research in immunology, vaccine development, infectious disease, allergy, autoimmunity, and the design of diagnostic tests and targeted immunotherapies.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California The autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls the activity of the body's internal organs and regulates changes in their activity depending on the current environment. The vagus nerve, which innervates many of the internal organs, is an important part of the system. When our brain senses danger, vagal tone is inhibited, leading to a set of changes in the body designed to make us more prepared to fight or...

The revenue recognition principle is a central guideline in accrual accounting that dictates when revenue should be recorded in financial statements. It requires that revenue be recognized when a company satisfies a performance obligation, meaning when it has delivered goods or completed services as agreed in a contract, regardless of when the customer pays. This principle ensures that income is reported in the accounting period in which it is actually earned, providing a more accurate...

Expense Recognition

2025

An expense represents the outflow of economic resources a business uses to generate revenue, encompassing costs such as labor, materials, and services. In accrual accounting, the recording of these costs follows the expense recognition principle, which requires that expenses be recognized in the same accounting period as the related revenues. This alignment ensures that financial statements accurately reflect a business's economic activity during a specific period rather than simply tracking...

Development of an Antigen-driven Colitis Model to Study Presentation of Antigens by Antigen Presenting Cells to T Cells

In this antigen-driven colitis model, OT-II CD4+ T cells expressing a red fluorescent protein were adoptively transferred into RAG-/- mice that express a green fluorescent protein in mononuclear phagocytes (MPs). The hosts were challenged with Escherichia coli (E.coli) expressing the ovalbumin protein (OVA) fused to a cyan fluorescent protein (CFP).
