Antioxidant Properties

Antioxidant properties describe the capacity of a substance or biological system to limit oxidative damage caused by reactive molecules, especially reactive oxygen species (ROS). Antioxidants work by donating an electron or hydrogen atom to reactive species, stabilizing them before they oxidize lipids, proteins, DNA, or other cellular components; some also support enzymatic defenses that remove ROS. In biology, measuring antioxidant activity helps researchers compare molecules, foods, extracts, and cellular responses under oxidative stress. These analyses inform studies of metabolism, aging, inflammation, and disease mechanisms, while guiding investigation of compounds with potential protective effects, although activity in a test system does not always predict effects in living organisms.

Evaluation of Antioxidant and Anthelmintic Properties of Tithonia diversifolia Extracts Against Gastrointestinal Nematode Eggs Using In Vitro Assays

2025

This study evaluated the biological activities of Tithonia diversifolia extracts using radical-based methods and an in vitro egg hatching assay (EHA) to assess their effects on gastrointestinal nematodes in small ruminants. The methodology and key findings are described, highlighting the potential of these extracts for controlling parasites.

Comparative Study on the Polysaccharide Contents and Antioxidant Activities of Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis and Hippophae gyantsensis

2025

This study compared the polysaccharide contents of Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis Rousi and Hippophae gyantsensis (Rousi) Y. S. Lian obtained through hot water extraction and quantified through phenol-sulfuric acid colorimetry. We also investigated in vitro antioxidant activities of polysaccharides from these two Hippophae species through 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging experiments.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter

2020

The characteristics that enable us to distinguish one substance from another are called properties. Physical Properties of Matter A physical property is a characteristic of matter that is not associated with a change in its chemical composition. Familiar examples of physical properties include density, color, hardness, melting and boiling points, and electrical conductivity. We can observe some physical properties, such as density and color, without changing the physical state of the matter...

Properties of Transition Metals

2020

Transition metals are defined as those elements that have partially filled d orbitals. As shown in Figure 1, the d-block elements in groups 3–12 are transition elements. The f-block elements, also called inner transition metals (the lanthanides and actinides), also meet this criterion because the d orbital is partially occupied before the f orbitals. Figure 1: Periodic Table. The transition metals are located in groups 3–11 of the periodic table. The inner transition metals are in the two rows...

Physical Properties Of Minerals II: Polymineralic Analysis

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder The physical properties of minerals include various measurable and discernible attributes, including color, streak, magnetic properties, hardness, crystal growth form, and crystal cleavage. These properties are mineral-specific, and they are fundamentally related to a particular mineral’s chemical make-up and atomic structure. This video examines several physical properties that are useful in field and hand sample mineral...
