Bio Beads

Bio Beads are porous polymeric adsorbent beads used in biological research to remove detergents and other hydrophobic compounds from aqueous samples. Their internal surfaces capture detergent molecules through hydrophobic interactions, allowing researchers to reduce detergent concentration without directly separating target biomolecules from solution; performance depends on bead amount, contact time, mixing, and sample composition. In membrane-protein research, Bio Beads support detergent removal during protein reconstitution, proteoliposome preparation, and related biochemical workflows. This controlled cleanup can help preserve membrane-protein structure and enable downstream functional assays, although conditions must be optimized to avoid unintended loss of lipids or hydrophobic proteins.

This article describes a biofabrication approach: deposition of stimuli-responsive polysaccharides in the presence of biased electrodes to create biocompatible films which can be functionalized with cells or proteins. We demonstrate a bench-top strategy for the generation of the films as well as their basic uses for creating interactive biofunctionalized surfaces for lab-on-a-chip applications.

The synthesis of asymmetric species of ferrocene is challenging using solution techniques. This report focuses on the methods carried out to produce a ferrocene-biotin bioconjugate using facile and clean reactions accomplished via solid-phase synthesis. Incorporation of a thiolate moiety is shown to impart the ability for immobilization on gold surfaces.
