Bioleaching

Bioleaching is a biological process that uses microorganisms to extract metals from ores, mineral concentrates, or waste materials, providing an alternative to some conventional chemical and high-temperature methods. In acidic environments, often created or maintained by acidophilic bacteria and archaea, microbes oxidize iron and sulfur compounds, generating ferric iron and sulfuric acid that dissolve metal-bearing minerals and release ions into solution. The resulting metal-rich liquid can undergo downstream recovery through processes such as precipitation or solvent extraction. In biology and environmental research, bioleaching supports resource recovery from low-grade ores and electronic waste while informing studies of microbial metabolism and sustainable mining.
