Calcium Ion Concentration

Calcium ion concentration is the amount of dissolved Ca²⁺ in a cell, tissue, or surrounding fluid, and it is a key determinant of cellular signaling and physiological function. Cells regulate this concentration through selective calcium channels, pumps, exchangers, and intracellular buffers that create controlled gradients between the cytoplasm, organelles, and extracellular space. Signals that alter cytosolic calcium can activate enzymes, trigger muscle contraction, regulate neurotransmitter release, and influence gene expression, while disrupted calcium balance can impair cell function. Measuring calcium ion concentration therefore supports research in cell biology, neurobiology, physiology, disease mechanisms, and pharmacology.

Calcification Assay to Measure Calcium Concentration in Aortic Valve Interstitial Cells

2025

This video demonstrates an assay technique for assessing the calcification of the aortic valve interstitial cells in vitro. The assay helps to quantify the calcium concentration using the arsenazo III reagent, a calcium-sensitive dye that reacts with calcium ions to form a purple-colored calcium-arsenazo complex.

Imaging Calcium Dynamics in Pancreatic Cells: A Technique to Study Real-time Changes in Cytosolic Calcium Concentration in Pancreatic Islet

2023

This video describes the technique of imaging islet cells in real-time, to study the changes in cytosolic calcium concentration in the minor subpopulations of the pancreatic islet cells. Minor cell subpopulations can be identified using functional responses to marker compounds, such as adrenaline and ghrelin, that induce changes in cytosolic calcium in a specific populations of islet cells. This can provide an insight into the cross talk between the blood glucose and the islet secretory output.

Feedback Regulation of Calcium Concentration

2023

Calcium is an essential signaling molecule required for various cellular functions. Calcium pumps and ion channels on cell and organellar membranes, such as those on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), regulate calcium concentrations inside the cell. They remain closed, keeping the cytosolic calcium levels low at a resting state. Various transmembrane receptors, such as G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), elicit a response to extracellular signals by increasing cytosolic calcium. Activated GPCRs...

Merging Ion Concentration Polarization between Juxtaposed Ion Exchange Membranes to Block the Propagation of the Polarization Zone

2017

The protocol for a novel ion concentration polarization (ICP) platform that can stop the propagation of the ICP zone, regardless of the operating conditions is described. This unique ability of the platform lies in the use of merging ion depletion and enrichment, which are two polarities of the ICP phenomenon.
