Campfire Exercise

Campfire Exercise is a biology learning activity that uses combustion at a campfire to illustrate how organisms transform stored chemical energy into usable energy. As wood reacts with oxygen, oxidation releases energy as heat and light; cellular respiration follows a related energy-releasing principle but transfers energy through controlled reactions that capture part of it in ATP. By comparing these processes, students can connect combustion, metabolism, oxygen use, carbon dioxide production, and energy transfer. The exercise supports understanding of thermodynamics and helps distinguish rapid, uncontrolled burning from the regulated biochemical pathways that sustain cells.
