Carbon Monoxide Uptake

Carbon monoxide uptake is the movement and utilization of carbon monoxide (CO) by biological systems, an important process in microbial carbon cycling and environmental transformation. In carboxydotrophic microorganisms, CO enters the cell and is oxidized by carbon monoxide dehydrogenase to carbon dioxide, transferring electrons into pathways that generate energy and may support growth. Measuring CO uptake helps characterize microbial metabolism, identify CO-transforming organisms in soils, sediments, and aquatic environments, and evaluate how biological communities influence CO concentrations. This process also informs studies of microbial ecology, biogeochemical cycles, and engineered systems designed to remove or convert CO.

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...

Mitochondrial Calcium Uptake Assay: A Plate Reader-Based Method for Measuring Calcium Uptake in Isolated Mitochondria

Source: Cafini, F., et.al. Methodology for the Study of Horizontal Gene Transfer in Staphylococcus aureus. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates competence-induced DNA uptake in Staphylococcus aureus through natural transformation. A chloramphenicol-sensitive strain engineered to constitutively express a sigma factor is cultured under nutrient-limiting conditions to enhance competence, then incubated with donor DNA carrying a resistance gene. Successful gene transfer is confirmed by the...

Measuring Dopamine Uptake in Mouse Brain Synaptosomes Using Radiolabeled Dopamine

2025

This video demonstrates the assessment of dopamine uptake in synaptosomes harvested from mouse brains. It outlines steps for preparing synaptosomes for dopamine uptake via dopamine transporters, treating them with varying concentrations of radiolabeled dopamine, isolating the synaptosomes, and measuring radioactivity to quantify dopamine uptake.
