Cell Seeding

Cell seeding is the controlled placement of cells into a culture vessel or biomaterial at a defined density to initiate in vitro growth and organization. Researchers typically dissociate cells into a uniform suspension, calculate the desired concentration, distribute them across an appropriate surface or scaffold, and maintain conditions that support attachment, survival, and proliferation; seeding density can influence cell-cell signaling, morphology, and growth rate. In biology, consistent cell seeding supports reproducible experiments, including cytotoxicity testing, tissue engineering, wound-healing assays, and organoid or three-dimensional culture models, making it essential for reliable comparisons across samples.

MSC Seeded Scaffold Preparation: A Technique to Prepare Scaffold Seeded with Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Surgical Implantation into Murine Model

2025

This video describes the technique of seeding mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) onto a biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) scaffold. The prepared scaffolds can be implanted into the surgical resection cavity of the brain from where they may migrate towards tumor foci. Further, these cells can be engineered to express therapeutic proteins to stimulate apoptosis in cancer cells.

Seed Structure and Early Development of the Sporophyte

2020

Seed structures are composed of a protective seed coat surrounding a plant embryo, and a food store for the developing embryo. The embryo contains the precursor tissues for leaves, stem, and roots. The endosperm and cotyledons—seed leaves—act as the food reserves for the growing embryo. The embryo contains a double set of chromosomes, one set from each parent. Fertilization of the haploid egg by the haploid sperm gives rise to the zygote, which develops into the embryo. The endosperm is a...

A Seed Coat Bedding Assay to Genetically Explore In Vitro How the Endosperm Controls Seed Germination in Arabidopsis thaliana

2013

We present the procedure to assemble a seed coat bedding assay (SCBA) from Arabidopsis thaliana seeds. The SCBA was shown to be a powerful tool to explore genetically and in vitro how the endosperm controls seed germination in dormant seeds and in response to light cues. The SCBA is in principle applicable under any situation where the endosperm is suspected to influence embryonic growth.

Introduction to Seed Plants

2026

Most plants are seed plants—characterized by seeds, pollen, and reduced gametophytes. Seed plants include gymnosperms and angiosperms. Gymnosperms—cycads, ginkgo biloba, gnetophytes, and conifers—typically form cones. The pollen cones contain male gametophytes. The ovulate cones contain female gametophytes and form exposed seeds when fertilized. Angiosperms, the most diverse and ubiquitous group of land plants, form flowers, and fruit. Like the cones of gymnosperms, the flowers and fruit of...

2011

A method for seeding titanium blood-contacting biomaterials with autologous cells and testing biocompatibility is described. This method uses endothelial progenitor cells and titanium tubes, seeded within minutes of surgical implantation into porcine venae cavae. This technique is adaptable to many other implantable biomedical devices.
