Chemotactic Index

The chemotactic index is a quantitative measure of how strongly cells or organisms move toward or away from a chemical signal, making it useful for evaluating directed movement in biology. It is typically calculated from movement relative to a chemoattractant gradient, such as the net displacement toward the signal divided by total displacement or path length, with positive and negative values indicating attraction or repulsion. Researchers use the chemotactic index to compare migration across cell types, signaling conditions, and treatments in processes such as immune-cell recruitment, wound repair, development, and microbial behavior. These measurements help connect chemical sensing with cellular motility and tissue-level responses.

Measurement of Natural Killer Cell Migration in Response to Chemotactic Stimuli

2025

This video demonstrates a method to study natural killer (NK) cell migration through a porous membrane insert system in response to chemoattractants. This method enables quantitative analysis of NK cell migration using flow cytometry.

Traction Microscopy Integrated with Microfluidics for Chemotactic Collective Migration

2019

Collective cell migration in development, wound healing, and cancer metastasis is often guided by the gradients of growth factors or signaling molecules. Described here is an experimental system combining traction microscopy with a microfluidic system and a demonstration of how to quantify the mechanics of collective migration under biochemical gradient.
