Chemotaxis Behavior

Chemotaxis behavior is the directed movement of cells or organisms in response to chemical gradients, allowing them to locate beneficial conditions or avoid harmful ones. In this process, chemoreceptors detect changes in attractant or repellent concentrations, and intracellular signaling adjusts movement patterns so the organism travels toward higher or lower chemical concentrations. In biology, chemotaxis helps explain how immune cells reach sites of infection, how bacteria find nutrients, and how cells organize during development and tissue repair. Studying this behavior supports research on cell signaling, host-microbe interactions, disease progression, and therapeutic strategies that influence cell migration.

C. elegans Chemotaxis Assay

2023

Chemotaxis is a process in which cells or organisms move in response to a chemical stimulus. In nature, chemotaxis is important for organisms to sense and move toward food sources and move away from stimuli that may be toxic or harmful. Chemotaxis is also important at the cellular level. For example, chemotaxis is required for the movement of sperm toward an egg prior to fertilization. In the lab, chemotaxis is frequently examined in the nematode, C. elegans, which is known to migrate...

A method of quantitatively evaluating the chemotactic response of Caenorhabditis elegans is described. A chemotactic index (CI) was employed as a way to precisely evaluate the response of worms to certain targets, and serve as a platform of comparison between strains and compounds of interest.

Visual chemotaxis assays are essential for a better understanding of how eukaryotic cells control chemoattractant-mediated directional cell migration. Here, we describe detailed methods for: 1) real-time, high-resolution monitoring of multiple chemotaxis assays, and 2) simultaneously visualizing the chemoattractant gradient and the spatiotemporal dynamics of signaling events in neutrophil-like HL60 cells.

Measuring Associative Learning in Chemotaxis of the Nematode Caenorhabditis elegans

Here, we present a protocol to test associative learning by performing classical conditioning in the model organism C. elegans. The paradigm is based on pairing the concentration of salt in the environment with the presence or absence of food, which alters their chemotaxis towards or away from salt.
