Chimeric Embryos

Chimeric embryos are developing embryos composed of cells from two or more genetically distinct sources, created to study how cells communicate, migrate, and contribute to tissues during development. Researchers typically combine early-stage embryos or introduce pluripotent stem cells into a host embryo, allowing donor and host cells to proliferate and integrate as development proceeds. In biology, chimeric embryos help reveal mechanisms of cell fate, organ formation, and developmental compatibility. They also support disease modeling and investigations into regenerative medicine, while raising important questions about species boundaries, embryo research, and the ethical limits of combining cells from different organisms.

Live tracking of individual WT retinal progenitors in distinct genetic backgrounds allows for the assessment of the contribution of cell non-autonomous signaling during neurogenesis. Here, a combination of gene knockdown, chimera generation via embryo transplantation and in vivo time-lapse confocal imaging was utilized for this purpose.
