Chondroitin

Chondroitin is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan, a complex carbohydrate that contributes to the structure and function of connective tissues throughout the body. Built from repeating disaccharide units and commonly linked to core proteins as part of proteoglycans, its negatively charged sulfate groups attract water and ions, helping tissues resist compression and organize extracellular matrix components. Chondroitin is especially abundant in cartilage, where it supports hydration, elasticity, and interactions among cells and matrix molecules. Studying chondroitin helps explain tissue development, joint biology, and degenerative disease, while its properties support research into nutritional supplements, biomaterials, and strategies for cartilage repair.

An injectable tissue engineering scaffold composed of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-graft-chondroitin sulfate (PNIPAAm-g-CS)-containing alginate microparticles was prepared. The adhesive strength, swelling properties and in vitro biocompatibility are analyzed in this study. The characterization techniques developed here may be applicable to other thermogelling systems.

Here, we present a protocol for the synthesis of placental chondroitin sulfate A binding peptide (plCSA-BP)-conjugated lipid-polymer nanoparticles via single-step sonication and bioconjugate techniques. These particles constitute a novel tool for the targeted delivery of therapeutics to most human tumors and placental trophoblasts to treat cancers and placental disorders.

Lentiviruses are a valuable research tool for exploring gene function; however, researchers may wish to avoid production of pantropic lentivirus encoding known or suspected oncogenes. As an alternative, we present a safer protocol for use of ecotropic lentivirus on human cells modified to express the ecotropic receptor mSlc7a1.

Combining Peripheral Nerve Grafting and Matrix Modulation to Repair the Injured Rat Spinal Cord

Traumatic injury to the spinal cord disrupts communication with the brain. To restore lost connectivity we utilize a peripheral nerve graft to provide a substratum for regenerating fibers in combination with neurotrophic factors and matrix-modulating enzymes to remove inhibitory molecules to promote long distance growth.
