Cold Storage Protocols

Cold storage protocols are standardized procedures for preserving biological samples, cells, tissues, reagents, and organisms by maintaining them at controlled low temperatures. Cooling slows enzyme activity, cellular metabolism, chemical reactions, and microbial growth, while protocol-specific choices about temperature, containers, labeling, and handling help limit damage during storage and recovery. In biology, these protocols support cell culture, biobanking, molecular analysis, clinical research, and the transport of temperature-sensitive materials. Reliable cold storage improves sample integrity, reproducibility, and long-term access to biological resources, making temperature control and careful monitoring essential to experimental quality.

A schema is a mental framework that helps individuals organize and interpret information. Schemata, formed from previous experiences, influence how we process new information: how we encode it, the inferences we make, and how we retrieve it. For instance, a schema for what a typical classroom looks like might include desks, a teacher's desk, a whiteboard, and students in such an environment. This expectation helps us quickly understand and navigate new classrooms without needing to analyze each...

Regulating Temperature in the Lab: Preserving Samples Using Cold

2023

Preservation of laboratory samples, specimens, and reagents using extreme cold is routinely performed in biomedical research labs. This video will discuss some of the methods for keeping laboratory samples cold and will explain the correct cooling method to use for each experimental requirement. For example, cooling agents, such as ice and dry ice, are typically used when keeping samples cold during experiments. This video discusses the physical properties of the most commonly used cooling...

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Working with extreme temperatures, both high and low, is an integral part of many laboratory operations. For many, mentioning a laboratory instantly evokes the mental picture of a Bunsen burner. Bunsen burners and hot plates are used extensively in small and large operations in research laboratories and industries, thus making it necessary for all users to be aware of their safe handling...

Chemical Storage: Categories, Hazards And Compatibilities

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA While the use of various chemicals in experimental research is essential, it is also important to safely store and maintain them as a part of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program. The properties of chemicals and their reactivity vary broadly and if chemicals are not managed, stored, and labeled properly, they can have harmful or even destructive consequences such as toxic fume...
