Colony Health Monitoring

Colony health monitoring is the systematic assessment of the health, welfare, and disease status of animals maintained in a managed research colony. It combines routine observation, clinical examination, record review, and pathogen surveillance, often using sentinel animals or diagnostic testing to detect infections and changes in colony status. By identifying abnormal behavior, illness, or emerging pathogens early, monitoring supports timely intervention, protects animal welfare, and helps prevent transmission within and between facilities. In biology and biomedical research, reliable health data also improves experimental reproducibility by reducing the effects of undetected disease, stress, or variation in colony conditions.

2025

Here, we experimentally compare singly curved and straight piezoelectric transducers embedded in reinforced concrete structures for energy harvesting and structural health monitoring by evaluating their open-circuit voltage, power generation, power storage, and damage detection capability. Curved transducers have surpassed the straight ones, offering better performance for real-world applications.

The present protocol introduces a non-commercial self-developed application for collecting real-time on-site data, including psychological scales, GPS location, heart rate, and blood-oxygen saturation level, as well as the application's operating procedures. An empirical study conducted in Taiwan in 2020 was used as an application example.

Keratinocyte Colony Formation Assay: An In Vitro Assay to Assess the Ability of Keratinocytes to Grow into Colonies
