Cubitus Interruptus

Cubitus interruptus (Ci) is a zinc-finger transcription factor that mediates Hedgehog signaling in Drosophila and helps establish spatial patterns during embryonic and tissue development. When Hedgehog is absent, the full-length Ci protein is partially processed into a shorter transcriptional repressor, whereas Hedgehog signaling through Patched and Smoothened prevents this processing and allows Ci to activate target genes. By converting extracellular signals into regulated gene expression, Ci coordinates cell fate decisions, growth, and pattern formation. Its function provides a classic model for understanding morphogen pathways and the conserved relationship between Drosophila Ci and vertebrate Gli proteins.
