Dominant Recessive Traits

Dominant and recessive traits are patterns of inheritance that describe how alternative versions of a gene, called alleles, influence an observable characteristic, or phenotype. In a simple Mendelian model, a dominant allele can determine the phenotype when paired with either a dominant or recessive allele, whereas a recessive phenotype usually appears only when an individual inherits two recessive alleles. Genotypes, including homozygous and heterozygous combinations, can be represented with Punnett squares to calculate expected offspring ratios and identify unaffected carriers of recessive alleles. Studying these patterns provides a foundation for interpreting pedigrees, predicting inheritance in biological populations, and understanding how genetic variation contributes to traits and inherited conditions.

Dominant and Dominated Strategies

In strategic decision-making, a dominant strategy is one that always provides the best outcome for a player, no matter what the other players decide. This ensures that the player's payoff is maximized regardless of the choices made by others. On the other hand, a dominated strategy consistently leads to a worse outcome than another available strategy, regardless of the opponent's decision. For instance, imagine two firms competing in a market by setting production levels—either high or low.

The term self-esteem is often used generically, to refer to how people feel about themselves. However, according to research, there are three distinct constructs that should not be used interchangeably (Brown & Marshall, 2006). Global Self-Esteem When someone says they have high self-esteem, they are likely referring to their global or trait self-esteem—an individual’s self-opinion over long periods, which typically remains stable throughout adulthood. Research suggests that it probably...

The 2008 financial crisis disrupted both the financial system and everyday economic activity. A sharp pullback in banks’ willingness to lend caused a credit crunch, making it harder for businesses and households to access credit. Without access to credit, production slowed, and workers were laid off.Consumer sentiment deteriorated sharply during this period. The dual shock of plummeting home values and declining equity markets eroded household wealth. In response, households cut back on...

Gregor Mendel's work (1822 - 1884) was primarily focused on pea plants. Through his initial experiments, he determined that every gene in a diploid cell has two variants called alleles inherited from each parent. He suggested that amongst these two alleles, one allele is dominant in character and the other recessive. The combination of alleles determines the phenotype of a gene in an organism. According to Mendel, organisms with both copies or a single copy of the dominant allele display a...
