Drosha

Drosha is a nuclear RNase III enzyme that initiates microRNA biogenesis, a gene-regulatory pathway in which small RNAs control messenger RNA activity and protein production. Working with the RNA-binding protein DGCR8 in the Microprocessor complex, Drosha recognizes primary microRNA transcripts and cleaves their stem-loop structures to produce precursor microRNAs, which are then exported to the cytoplasm for further processing by Dicer. This mechanism helps regulate development, differentiation, and cellular homeostasis. Studying Drosha provides insight into post-transcriptional gene regulation and supports research on disorders linked to disrupted microRNA processing, including cancer and developmental disease.
