Allele Variation

Allele variation is the presence of different versions of a gene within a population, creating genetic diversity among individuals. It arises when changes in DNA, such as mutations, alter gene sequences, while meiosis and recombination reshuffle alleles into new combinations; natural selection, genetic drift, and gene flow then influence their frequency over generations. Allele variation can affect traits, disease susceptibility, and responses to environmental conditions. Studying these differences helps biologists explain inheritance, population adaptation, evolutionary relationships, and variation in responses to medical treatments.

What is Variation?

2023

Apart from the measures of central tendency, distribution, outliers, and the changing characteristics of data with time, an important characteristic of any data set is its variation or spread. In some data sets, the data values are concentrated closely near the mean; in others, the data values are more widely spread out from the mean. The range, standard deviation, standard error, and variance are the different measures of variation. Range: The range is the difference between its maximum and...

Multiple Allele Traits

For the same gene multiple alleles can interact to influence phenotypes like the shape and protein composition of an individual cells.By studying allele interactions on the molecular and cellular levels researchers can understand the resulting phenotypes and complications of human conditions like sickle cell trait, improving treatment. The ABO blood group system is a common example of multiple alleles in humans. This system includes three alleles called IA, IB, and i alleles, which combine in...

Lethal Alleles

Agouti: A Lethal Allele Lucien Cuénot discovered lethal alleles in 1905 while studying the inheritance of coat color in mice. The agouti gene is responsible for the color of the coat in mice. This gene codes for an agouti-signaling protein, which is responsible for melanin distribution in mammals. The wild-type allele gives rise to gray-brown coat color in mice, while the mutant allele gives rise to yellow coat color. In addition to coat color, the agouti gene is associated with the yellow...

An Allele-specific Gene Expression Assay to Test the Functional Basis of Genetic Associations

2010

Genetic associations often remain unexplained at a functional level. This method aims to assess the effect of phenotype-associated genetic markers on gene expression by analyzing cells heterozygous for transcribed SNPs. The technology allows accurate measurement by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to quantify allele-specific primer extension products.

An important characteristic of any set of data is the variation in the data. In some data sets, the data values are concentrated closely near the mean; in other data sets, the data values are more widely spread out from the mean. The most common measure of variation, or spread, is the standard deviation, which is the square root of variance. When independent and dependent variables are plotted on a scatter plot, the slope of a line is a value that describes the rate of change between the two...
