Electrophysiologic Parameters

Electrophysiologic parameters are measurable electrical properties of cells and tissues, including membrane potential, ionic currents, resistance, and signal timing, that reveal how biological systems communicate and function. These parameters arise from the movement of charged ions across cell membranes through channels and transporters, generating voltage changes that can produce and propagate action potentials. Researchers measure them with electrodes, patch-clamp methods, or related recording techniques to characterize excitable cells such as neurons, muscle fibers, and cardiac cells. In biology, these measurements support studies of cell signaling, development, disease mechanisms, drug effects, and the electrical coordination underlying physiological processes.

Wave Parameters

The simplest mechanical waves are associated with simple harmonic motion and repeat themselves for several cycles. These simple harmonic waves can be modeled using a combination of sine and cosine functions. Consider a simplified surface water wave that moves across the water's surface. Unlike complex ocean waves, in surface water waves, water moves vertically, oscillating up and down, whereas the disturbance of the wave moves horizontally through the medium. If a seagull is floating on the...
