Embryo Collection

Embryo collection is a reproductive biology technique used to recover preimplantation embryos from a female donor for examination, preservation, or transfer. In many protocols, ovulation and fertilization are coordinated, then embryos are retrieved from the reproductive tract by flushing the uterus or through surgical collection, depending on the species and developmental stage. Researchers assess embryo morphology and developmental quality before transferring embryos to synchronized recipients or preserving them by cryopreservation. The method supports embryo transfer programs, assisted reproduction, genetic selection, and studies of early development, providing access to embryos that can be cultured, analyzed, or used to establish pregnancies.

In this video-article we present a step-by-step demonstration on how to collect and cryopreserve hamster oocytes with high post-thaw survival rates. The same procedure can also be applied to successfully freeze and thaw mouse embryos at different stages of preimplantation development.

Microinjection of Live Drosophila Embryos: Early Delivery of Reagents to the Developing Embryo

This video describes how to perform microinjections that deliver reagents into live Drosophila embryos. Researchers can use this method to introduce exogenous compounds like nucleic acids and proteins during the early stages of embryo development. The featured protocol demonstrates how to set up and perform the procedure for injection of any soluble reagent–here, a fluorescent protein for live imaging experiments.
