Embryonic Chicken Model

The embryonic chicken model is a vertebrate research system that uses developing chicken embryos to study embryology, organ formation, genetics, and disease. Because the embryo develops in a readily accessible egg, researchers can observe tissues in vivo, manipulate embryonic structures, and examine how signaling pathways guide cell differentiation, migration, and morphogenesis. Experimental approaches include incubation, windowing the eggshell, microinjection, tissue grafting, and imaging at defined developmental stages. This model provides a practical bridge between cellular mechanisms and whole-organism development, supporting research on neural patterning, limb formation, vascular development, toxicology, and regenerative biology while reducing the complexity and cost of some mammalian experiments.

Source: Yates, J. G. E., et al. Production of High-Titer Recombinant Newcastle Disease Virus from Allantoic Fluid. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)The video demonstrates the purification and concentration of virus particles from clarified allantoic fluid collected from virus-infected embryonated chicken eggs. It showcases a series of filtration and separation steps, including depth filtration, tangential flow filtration, and density gradient ultracentrifugation to isolate intact viruses. The virus-rich...

Parasite Induced Genetically Driven Autoimmune Chagas Heart Disease in the Chicken Model

The inoculation of Trypanosoma cruzi in fertile eggs prior to incubation renders the parasite kDNA minicircle integration in embryo cells genome. Crossbreeding reveals the vertical transfer of the mutations to progeny. The kDNA integrates into coding regions at several chromosomes and the chickens die with an inflammatory autoimmune heart disease.

Chicken Chorioallantoic Membrane-based Cancer Modeling: An In Ovo Model to Study Cancer Cell Tumorigenesis and Metastasis
