Experimental Simulation

Experimental simulation is the controlled reproduction of biological conditions, systems, or processes to examine how they behave under defined variables. It works by representing key components and interactions in a model, then manipulating parameters or experimental conditions while measuring predicted or observed responses. In biology, simulations support hypothesis testing, help isolate factors that are difficult to control in living organisms, and complement laboratory experiments by comparing outcomes across scenarios. They are used to study population dynamics, disease spread, cellular behavior, and ecosystem change, improving experimental design and helping researchers identify mechanisms, evaluate risks, and guide future investigations.

We present a technique to achieve low-velocity to intermediate-velocity collisions between fragile dust aggregates in the laboratory. For this purpose, two vacuum drop-tower setups have been developed that allow collision velocities between <0.01 and ~10 m/sec. The collision events are recorded by high-speed imaging.

Experimental Investigation of the Hierarchical Control in DC Microgrids Using a Real-time Simulator

2025

This article presents a DC microgrid with hierarchical control implemented in a simulator, OPAL RT-Lab. It details the circuit modeling, primary and secondary control strategies, and experimental validation. The results demonstrate effective control performance, highlighting the importance of a robust experimental platform for microgrid research and development.

Realism in Experimentation

2023

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University In an ideal world researchers would conduct their studies in real world settings where behaviors naturally happen. For example, if you want to see what influences individuals’ voting behavior, it would be best to watch them vote. However, research in these settings is not always ethical or even practical. Further, a researcher may want more control over the setting to better pinpoint the exact...

Study of Siphon Breaker Experiment and Simulation for a Research Reactor

2017

The siphon breaking phenomenon was investigated experimentally and a theoretical model was proposed. A simulation program based on the theoretical model was developed and the results of the simulation program were compared with experimental results. It was concluded that the results of the simulation program matched the experimental results well.
