Form Function

Form-function relationships describe how the structure of a biological entity enables its activities and determines how it interacts with its environment. In biology, molecular arrangements, cellular organization, tissue architecture, and whole-organism anatomy influence function by controlling processes such as transport, signaling, movement, and energy use. These relationships arise through developmental programs and evolutionary adaptation, linking genotype, phenotype, and survival. Studying form and function helps researchers explain how organisms operate, compare adaptations across species, interpret disease-related structural changes, and design experiments in fields ranging from cell biology to ecology and biomedical research.

Presented here is a protocol using Leishmania major promastigotes to determine the binding, cytotoxicity, and signaling induced by pore-forming toxins. A proof-of-concept with streptolysin O is provided. Other toxins can also be used to leverage the genetic mutants available in L. major to define new mechanisms of toxin resistance.

Phenotypic and Functional Characterization of Endothelial Colony Forming Cells Derived from Human Umbilical Cord Blood

Endothelial colony forming cells (ECFCs) are circulating endothelial cells with robust clonal proliferative potential that display intrinsic in vivo vessel forming ability. Phenotypic and functional characterization of outgrowth endothelial cells derived from CB are important to identify and isolate bona fide ECFCs for potential clinical application in repairing damaged tissues.

Production of Formed Elements

Hemangioblasts are multipotent stem cells originating from the mesoderm. They give rise to hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which undergo hematopoiesis to produce all the formed elements of blood. This process is regulated by a complex network of hematopoietic growth factors, including transcription factors, growth factors, and cytokines. These factors stimulate the HSCs to divide and differentiate, though some HSCs remain undifferentiated to maintain a self-renewing pool. Most HSCs commit to...

The Legal Forms of Acquisition

Acquisitions involve one company purchasing another's shares or assets to achieve strategic goals like market expansion, operational synergies, or increased value. The three main methods, asset acquisition, stock acquisition, and merger and consolidation, each have distinct financial, operational, and legal implications. An asset acquisition allows the buyer to select specific assets while typically avoiding unwanted liabilities, offering flexibility and reduced risk. This approach is ideal for...
