Femoral Vein Collection

Femoral vein collection is a venipuncture method that obtains blood from the femoral vein, a large vessel in the thigh, when peripheral access is limited or larger sample volumes are needed. After appropriate restraint, site preparation, and aseptic handling, a needle or catheter enters the vein and gentle negative pressure draws blood into a syringe or collection tube; pressure afterward helps control bleeding. In biology and biomedical research, this technique supports hematology, biochemical analysis, pharmacokinetic studies, and longitudinal blood sampling, while careful technique helps preserve sample quality and minimize complications.

2023

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Central venous access is necessary in a multitude of clinical situations, including vascular access, vasopressor and caustic medication delivery, central venous pressure monitoring, volume resuscitation, total parental nutrition, hemodialysis, and frequent phlebotomy. There are three veins in the body that are accessed for central venous cannulation: the internal jugular, the subclavian, and the...

Here, we describe a simple tail vein blood sampling method in non-anesthetized rats using a vacuum extraction tube system. This method reduces the risk of direct exposure to blood and simplifies taking multiple samples from a single venipuncture.

Facial Vein Venipuncture for Murine Blood Collection

2025

Here, we present a protocol for an optimized blood collection technique in murine subjects through facial vein venipuncture using a lancet. We use this technique alongside flow cytometric assessment to characterize cellular phenotypes of transgenic, congenic, and reporter strains. It is also suitable for serum cytokine analysis and diabetes studies.

This protocol describes a procedure for serial sampling of femoral bone marrow (BM) without requiring the sacrifice of mice. This procedure facilitates longitudinal studies of the BM composition of mice over time and provides serial access to cells within the BM for ex vivo and transplantation studies.
