Glass Electrode

A glass electrode is an electrochemical sensor that measures ion activity, most commonly hydrogen-ion activity, through a thin glass membrane. When the membrane contacts solutions with different hydrogen-ion concentrations, ion exchange at its hydrated surfaces creates a membrane potential; a reference electrode and meter convert this potential into a pH value. In biology, glass electrodes support measurement of pH in buffers, culture media, biological fluids, and experimental samples. These measurements help researchers control conditions for enzyme activity, cell growth, and biochemical reactions while providing a rapid, non-destructive way to monitor changes in experimental systems.

The Looking Glass Self

The concept of the looking-glass self describes how an individual's self-concept is shaped by their perception of how others see them. This psychological theory, first introduced by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley in 1902, posits that self-identity emerges in a social context and is influenced by the judgments—real or imagined—of others.Research suggests that individuals frequently overestimate how positively others perceive them. This is particularly evident in physical self-perception,...

On comparing the reactivity of silver and lead, it is observed that the two ionic species, Ag+ (aq) and Pb2+ (aq), show a difference in their redox reactivity towards copper: the silver ion undergoes spontaneous reduction, while the lead ion does not. This relative redox activity can be easily quantified in electrochemical cells by a property called cell potential. This property is commonly known as cell voltage in electrochemistry, and it is a measure of the energy which accompanies the charge...
