Glut Proteins

GLUT proteins are membrane transporters that move glucose and related sugars across cell membranes, supporting cellular energy production and whole-body glucose homeostasis. They function through facilitated diffusion: a sugar molecule binds to a specific site, the transporter changes conformation, and the molecule is released on the side with a lower concentration without direct ATP use. Different GLUT isoforms show distinct tissue distributions and transport properties, allowing cells to regulate glucose uptake according to their metabolic needs. Studying these proteins helps explain insulin-responsive glucose transport, metabolic disorders such as diabetes, and how altered transporter activity affects physiology and disease.
