Groundwater Remediation

Groundwater remediation is the treatment or management of contaminated subsurface water to reduce pollutants and protect ecosystems, drinking-water supplies, and public health. Biological approaches, known as bioremediation, stimulate or support microorganisms that transform contaminants through metabolic processes, often by adjusting oxygen availability, adding nutrients or electron donors, or promoting natural attenuation. Depending on the contaminant and site conditions, remediation may also use plants, engineered treatment zones, or monitored microbial degradation. These methods connect groundwater science with biology by applying microbial ecology and biochemical reactions to restore aquifers, limit contaminant movement, and guide long-term environmental monitoring.
