Host Microbiome Interactions

Host microbiome interactions are the dynamic relationships between a host organism and the communities of microorganisms that inhabit its body, influencing health, development, and disease. Microbes communicate with host cells through surface molecules and metabolites, while the host regulates them through immune responses, nutrient availability, and physical barriers such as the intestinal epithelium. These exchanges can shape immune system maturation, nutrient processing, pathogen resistance, and tissue function. Studying host microbiome interactions helps researchers understand disorders associated with microbial imbalance and supports the development of probiotics, microbiome-targeted therapies, and other strategies for maintaining or restoring host health.

Bacterial attachment to host cells is a key step during host colonization and infection. This protocol describes the generation of polymer-coupled recombinant adhesins as biomimetic materials which allow analysis of the contribution of individual adhesins to these processes, independent of other bacterial factors.
