Image Processing Software

Image processing software comprises computational tools that transform, enhance, and analyze digital images, making visual information measurable and useful in biological research. These programs manipulate pixel intensity and color through operations such as filtering, thresholding, segmentation, and feature extraction, allowing researchers to separate structures from background and quantify characteristics including area, shape, fluorescence, or spatial distribution. In biology, image processing supports microscopy, cell counting, tissue analysis, developmental studies, and phenotyping, while reducing subjective visual scoring and improving reproducibility. Its analytical outputs can connect microscopic observations with experimental conditions, disease-related changes, and quantitative models.

Neural control and cognitive processes can be studied through eye movements. The VisualEyes software allows an operator to program stimuli on two computer screens independently using a simple, custom scripting language. The system can stimulate tandem eye movements (saccades and smooth pursuit) or opposing eye movements (vergence) or any combination.
