Insect Survival Assessment

Insect survival assessment is the systematic measurement of whether insects remain alive under defined environmental, biological, or experimental conditions, providing a basis for studying fitness and adaptation. Researchers track survival over time while controlling or comparing factors such as temperature, humidity, food availability, pathogens, pesticides, or other stressors, often using survival rates, mortality patterns, and time-to-death as key outcomes. In biology, these assessments help reveal how insects respond to environmental change, disease, toxic compounds, and resource limitation. The results support ecological studies, pest management, conservation research, and evaluation of interventions that affect insect populations.

Source: Zhang, C. et al. Development and Assessment of Intracellular Infection Models for Staphylococcus aureus. J. Vis. Exp. (2025)This video demonstrates the quantification of intracellular survival of a methicillin-resistant bacterial pathogen in mouse peritoneal macrophages. It outlines the steps involved in infection, extracellular bacterial clearance, host cell lysis, and colony enumeration to assess bacterial survival within host macrophages.

Osmoregulation in Insects

Malpighian tubules are specialized structures found in the digestive systems of many arthropods, including most insects, that handle excretion and osmoregulation. The tubules are typically arranged in pairs and have a convoluted structure that increases their surface area. Malpighian tubules extend from the digestive tract, typically the area between the midgut and hindgut, into the hemolymph—a mixture of blood and interstitial fluid found in insects and other arthropods, as well as most...

The monitoring of extracellular neurotransmitter levels in distinct brain regions of freely moving animals offers insights on the link between neurotransmitter release and behavior. In vivo microdialysis coupled with electrochemical detection provides excellent anatomical and chemical resolution; and information on how basal neurotransmission is altered by pharmacological or physiological manipulations.
