Maternal Condition Synchronization

Maternal condition synchronization is a biological process in which a mother’s physiological state, behavior, and resource allocation align with the timing and needs of reproduction and offspring development. It can involve coordinated changes in energy balance, hormone signaling, immune function, and caregiving as pregnancy, birth, or postnatal development progresses. This synchronization helps support fetal growth, milk production, protection, and early survival while matching maternal investment to available resources and environmental conditions. Studying the process connects reproductive biology, developmental biology, and animal behavior, providing insight into maternal effects, variation in offspring fitness, and how organisms respond to changing ecological pressures.

Measurement of Survival Time in Brachionus Rotifers: Synchronization of Maternal Conditions

2016

Rotifers are microscopic zooplankton used as models in ecotoxicological and aging studies. Here we provide a protocol for powerful and reproducible measurement of survival time in Brachionus rotifers. Synchronization of culture conditions over several generations is of particular importance because maternal condition affects life history of offspring.

AC Synchronous Machine Synchronization

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous generators are the main source of electrical power worldwide. They require a prime mover and an exciter in order to generate power. The prime mover can be a turbine spun by fluid (gas or liquid), thus the sources of the fluid can be water running off a dam through a long nozzle, steam from water evaporated using burned coal, etc. Most power plants including coal,...

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous motors are less popular than permanent magnet rotor synchronous motors due to the brushes required for the rotor field. Synchronous generators are much more common and available in most existing power plants, as they have excellent frequency and voltage regulation. Synchronous motors have the advantage of almost 0% speed regulation due to the fact that the rotor...

Isolation of Leukocytes from the Murine Tissues at the Maternal-Fetal Interface

Described herein is a protocol to isolate and analyze the infiltrating leukocytes of tissues at the maternal-fetal interface (uterus, decidua, and placenta) of mice. This protocol maintains the integrity of most cell surface markers and yields enough viable cells for downstream applications including flow cytometry analysis.
