Mating Pheromones

Mating pheromones are chemical signals released by an organism that influence sexual attraction, mate recognition, or reproductive behavior in members of the same species. Typically detected through olfactory or other chemosensory systems, these molecules activate neural pathways that can alter courtship, mate choice, readiness to reproduce, or reproductive physiology; their effects depend on concentration, timing, and the receiver’s sensory state. Studying mating pheromones helps biologists investigate communication, sexual selection, species recognition, and the evolution of reproductive strategies. Research on these signals also informs pest management, animal breeding, and studies of how environmental conditions shape chemical communication.

In mice, the ability to detect pheromones is principally mediated by the vomeronasal organ (VNO). Here, an acute tissue slice preparation of VNO for performing calcium imaging is described. This physiological approach allows observations of subpopulations and/or individual neurons in a living tissue and is convenient for receptor-ligand identification.

Sexual Selection Class Simulation ExpandNote: In this activity, you and your classmates will portray a sexually reproducing population consisting of an equal number of male and female animals. You will simulate several different mating scenarios to determine how relative quality, attractiveness, sex, and parental commitment affect mate choice and reproductive success. The goal of this activity is to maximize your progeny. Hypotheses: There are several overall hypotheses for female and male...

Choosing Mates Evolutionary fitness is largely determined by the ability of an organism to survive and successfully produce offspring. Critical to this process is sexual selection, which plays a large role in the determination of mating pairs, and thus which genes are passed on to the next generation. Often, intense competition for mates within a population places selective pressure on traits related to courtship and copulation. Natural selection that results from these pressures is called...
