Molecular Signature Database

The Molecular Signatures Database (MSigDB) is a curated resource of gene sets that represent biological pathways, cellular processes, regulatory programs, and disease-associated states. Each molecular signature groups genes sharing a defined biological feature, allowing researchers to compare gene-expression profiles with coordinated patterns rather than evaluating individual genes in isolation. In biology, MSigDB supports gene set enrichment analysis and related computational methods to identify pathways and functional programs associated with phenotypes, treatments, or experimental conditions. Its standardized collections help interpret high-throughput transcriptomic data, generate mechanistic hypotheses, and connect molecular changes to broader cellular and disease processes.

2026

Effective research begins with the ability to navigate academic databases efficiently. Unlike general web search engines, scholarly databases are designed to index peer-reviewed articles, conference proceedings, and other credible academic publications. Developing a structured search strategy ensures that researchers can identify relevant, high-quality sources with precision. For example, when studying how sleep patterns relate to circadian rhythms in humans, researchers should move beyond...

A thoracic oncology database was developed to serve as a comprehensive repository for clinical and laboratory data for the purposes of translational research. The database will serve translational cancer researchers within the Thoracic Oncology Research Program. This database is adaptable to other cancer models, as well as other human diseases.

Molecular Cloning

Molecular cloning is a set of methods, which are used to insert recombinant DNA into a vector - a carrier of DNA molecules that will replicate recombinant DNA fragments in host organisms. The DNA fragment, which may be a gene, can be isolated from a prokaryotic or eukaryotic specimen. Following isolation of the fragment of interest, or insert, both the vector and insert must be cut with restriction enzymes and purified. The purified pieces are joined together though a technique called...
